South Dakota Woman Dead After Being Hit By Train

Alvord, Iowa — A South Dakota woman is dead after being hit by a train in Alvord, Iowa on Friday night.

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office reports that just before 7:30 pm on Friday night, they received a report of a train versus pedestrian accident that occurred in Alvord. Upon investigation at the scene deputies were able to determine that 32-year-old Savannah Flynn of Marion, South Dakota had entered the railroad system in an area where two sets of tracks run parallel with one another.

According to the report, evidence at the scene suggested that Flynn believed the southbound Burlington Northern Santa Fe train was on the east set of tracks. Flynn attempted to cross the west set of tracks as the train was approaching and was struck by the train.

Flynn was pronounced dead at the scene. Alcohol is being considered a factor in this incident. The investigation is on-going.

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Iowa State Patrol, Alvord Fire and Rescue and Lyon County Ambulance.
