Nighthawks Fly Through The E-Hawks

In a battle of ranked teams in 2A and 1A, the Boyden Hull Rock Valley Nighthawks beat the Emmetsburg E-Hawks 34-14 Friday night in Emmetsburg.

After stopping the E-Hawks on the opening drive the Nighthawks were able to benefit from a missed snap on the punt giving the Nighthawks the ball on the Emmetsburg 36 yard line. Two plays later, Brandt Van Roekel threw a long pass to Jerod Hansen for a 32 yard touchdown. The missed extra point made the score 6-0, 3 minutes into the contest.

The Nighthawks added to that number a short while later when Brandt Van Roekel capped a 40 yard drive that ate up 2:57 with a 10 yard TD pass to Colin Bolkema, the two point conversion made the score 14-0 with 1:21 left in the first quarter. Not finished yet, the Nighthawks were able to put more points on the board when Miguel Alvarado finished a 80 yard TD drive that took 4:21 off of the game clock with his 3 yard TD run. With 5:29 left in the second quarter the Nighthawks took a 3 TD lead.

In a sudden turn of events, the E-Hawks drove the ball 94 yards in 1:52. In just 4 plays the E-Hawks were able to put 7 points on the board. The highlights of the drive were when both Running Back Andrew Wellik and Quarterback Jake Jackson put together 40 plus yard runs. When the E-Hawks were able to make a stop on the Nighthawks with the following drive, momentum seemed to be shifted. However, the Nighthawks were able to take advantage of a fumbled punt return and retained possession. They would score a few minutes later to make the halftime score 27-7 after Brandt Van Roekel threw a 3 yard TD pass to Andrew Van Ginkel.

The 3rd quarter was wasted away by a long drive for the Nighthawks. At the start of the 4th quarter, the Nighthawks finished a 51 yard drive with a 2 yard TD rush by Running Back Levi De Roon. The E-Hawks scored later in the 4th quarter to make the final score 34-14.

The E-Hawks (1-1) will play at North Union next week. Boyden Hull Rock Valley (2-0) hosts Sioux Center next week in Rock Valley.

Orabs Fall To Spencer In Non District Football

The Sheldon Orab Football Team fell to 1-1 in non district play Friday night dropping the home opener to the Spencer Tigers 42-14. With the win Spencer pulls even at 1-1 for the year as well.

The Tigers got on the board first as Hunter Cushman took a pitch around the right side and raced 90 yards for the game’s first score. Mark Malm added the extra point and Spencer was up 7-0 with 11:13 to go in the first quarter.

Sheldon forced a fumble and recovered at the Spencer 49 yard line. The Orabs cashed in quickly as Chris Balster found Nate Oostra up the right sideline for the touchdown. Balster added the extra point and the game was tied at 7-7 with 4:47 to go in the first quarter.

Spencer followed with a 70 yard drive as quarterback Matt Finnern scored on a 41 yard run. The extra point was good and the Tigers were back in front 14-7 with 3:18 to go in the first quarter.

Finnern capped a short 34 yard drive set up by the defense as he scored from 33 yards out. The extra point was good and the Tigers lead went to 21-7 with 1:12 to go in the first quarter.

Sheldon responded with a 62 yard drive. Balster capped it with a 3 yard touchdown run. Chris added the point after and the lead was cut to 21-14.

Spencer got on the board again just before halftime as Finnern found wide out Phillip Huisenga for an 11 yard score. Malm’s extra point was good and the tigers led 28-14 with: 07 seconds left in the half and that would be the score at intermission.
