Four From Hawarden Injured In Accident

Akron, Iowa — Four people from Hawarden were injured in an accident recently near Akron.

The Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office reports that they received a 911 call of a vehicle that had rolled. Multiple injuries were reported.

Akron Fire and Ambulance, Plymouth County Deputies, and the Iowa State Patrol were dispatched to Highway 3 and K-18, where they found two individuals with serious injuries, one of which had been thrown from the vehicle. They also found two others with what were described as “minor injuries”. Three of the four were transported to Mercy Hospital in Sioux City. The injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

Injured in the accident were Alexis, Ramon, Luis, and Gladis Topete, all of Hawarden.

The Sheriff’s Office reports that an investigation was initiated at the scene. Officers believe that the vehicle, a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee, was northbound on K-18 at a very high rate of speed. They think the vehicle did not stop for the stop sign at Highway 3. They say it is thought that it lost control north of the intersection, and entered the east ditch. They believe the vehicle then rolled several times before striking and breaking off a utility pole and then came to rest on its top.

They say the investigation continues. Authorities did not indicate who they believe was driving the vehicle.
