Seven People Transported To Hospitals After Accident Near Hartley

Hartley, Iowa– Seven people were taken to hospitals after an accident near Hartley on Friday afternoon, December 15, 2017.

The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office reports that about 4:55 PM, 52-year-old Roberta Massman of Paullina was driving a 2016 Chevy northbound on Vine Avenue, also known as M12, five and half miles south of Hartley. They say that 23-year-old Taylor Grohe of Hartley was southbound on Vine in a 2003 Chrysler.

The report says that Massman was making a left turn into a private driveway and failed to see the Grohe vehicle. It says Massman turned left into the southbound lane of travel in front of Grohe, and the two vehicles collided at the private driveway entrance. After the collision, Massman’s Chevy was spun around and came to rest in the east ditch where it impacted the side of the ditch. Grohe’s Chrysler came to rest on the southbound shoulder of the roadway.

The Primghar Ambulance took Massman and two children passengers, 3-year-old McKenzee Gable and Baylee Gable (who the report says is less than a year old) to Sanford Sheldon Hospital.
The Hartley Ambulance took Grohe and three passengers, 20-year-old Kaylee Mammen, 1-year-old Kaisley Atwood, and Rylee Mammen (who the report says is also less than a year old) to Baum Harmon Mercy Hospital in Primghar.

Both vehicles were totaled in the accident. Massman’s Chevy sustained $20,000 in damages, and Grohe’s Chrysler sustained $6000 in damages.

Massman was charged with failure to yield upon left turn.
