Two Taken To Hospital After Dirt Bike Accident

Doon, Iowa — A Sheldon teen and a man from George were taken to a hospital after a dirt bike accident near Doon on Saturday, May 13, 2017.

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office reports that about 6:15 p.m. Saturday evening, the two were part of a group riding dirt bikes in the ditches along Highway 75, three miles east of Doon, near Icon Ag. They report that 16-year-old Cade Vander Waal of Sheldon was southbound in the ditch approaching a field drive and at the same time 25-year-old Kent Vink of George was northbound approaching the same field drive. Vink attempted to ramp the field drive and did not see Vander Waal approaching from the north. Vink ramped the drive and his motorcycle collided head-on with Vander Waal’s motorcycle. Both riders were wearing helmets, according to the report.

They say Vink and Vander Waal were transported to Hegg Memorial Health Center in Rock Valley.

The Sheriff’s Office says that as a result of the accident, both Vink and Vander Waal were cited on a charge of operating an ATV on a highway. Vink was also cited on charges of careless driving, operating a non-registered vehicle, failure to have a valid license, and violation of financial liability (accident-related). The remaining riders in the group were also all cited on a charge of operating an ATV on a highway.

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office reports that the Doon Fire Department and Rescue Squad and the Lyon County Ambulance Squad assisted them with the response to the accident.

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind everyone that the road right of way is from fence line to fence line and it is illegal to ride ATVs and dirt bikes in a public road right of way.
