Two Vehicle Collision East Of Ritter

Ritter, Iowa — A Minnesota man’s vehicle was totaled in a collision just east of Ritter on Saturday, August 12th.

The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office reports that at 3:30 pm on Saturday, 92-year-old Byron Nieuwendorp of Sanborn was driving a 1993 Ford Ranger westbound on 280th Street, just east of Ritter. Twenty-six-year-old Michael Sellner of Sleepy Eye, Minnesota was driving a 2008 Ford Taurus southbound on Highway 60. According to the report, Nieuwendorp stopped at the first stop sign and then crossed the northbound lanes of Highway 60. Nieuwendorp then stopped in the median and was about to cross the southbound lanes of Highway 60. He began to pull out from the median stop sign and apparently did not see Sellner who began to move to the right to avoid a potential collision. Nieuwendorp then struck Sellner in the drivers side door.

Due to the collision, the two vehicles struck the stop sign for eastbound traffic. Sellner continued south and entered the west ditch and struck a Highway 60 South road sign. Nieuwendorp spun around and came to rest on the
eastbound stop sign island.

The Ranger received $2,000 damage; the Taurus received $15,000 damage. The stop sign received $500 damage.

No injuries were reported.
