Driver Flown To Sioux Falls Hospital After Car Lodges Under Semi

Sioux Center, Iowa– An Akron man was taken to a Sioux Falls hospital after an accident near Sioux Center.

The Iowa State Patrol reports that about 4:25 p.m. on Friday, August 31, 2018, 36-year-old Mark Klarenbeek of Inwood was driving a 1998 Peterbilt semi northbound on Goldfinch Avenue, two miles west of the Sioux Center Walmart. Twenty-six-year-old Michael Kots of Akron was eastbound on 410th Street in a 2006 Suzuki.

The report says that Kots struck the semi-trailer on the passenger side, right in front of the rear axles of the trailer. The trooper says both vehicles came to rest north of the intersection with Kots’car lodged under the semi-trailer. He says Kots’ car was drug about 80 feet north of the intersection.

The Sioux Center Ambulance took Kots to Sioux Center Health. He was later flown to Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. The trooper says Kots has non-life threatening injuries. The report also says that Kots had no drivers license and no insurance, but it does not say that Kots was charged.

Both Klarenbeek’s Peterbilt semi and Kots’ Suzuki sustained $5000 in damages, each. In the Suzuki’s case, it was enough to total the vehicle.

The Iowa State Patrol says the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office, Sioux Center Ambulance, and Sioux Center Fire assisted at the scene.
