Fireworks Blamed For Roof Fire On House

Sioux Center, Iowa — Fireworks get the blame for a residential roof fire early on Monday, July 2, 2018, in Sioux Center.

According to Sioux Center Fire Chief David Van Holland, a few minutes before 1:00 a.m., the Sioux Center Fire Department was called to the report of flames coming from a roof at 243 Nineteenth Street Southeast in Sioux Center.

The chief says the fire department saw the roof on fire as they approached the scene. He says they used water to fight the fire.

Van Holland says no injuries were reported.

The fire department was assisted by the Ireton Fire Department and the Orange City Fire Department Rapid Intervention Team, as well as the Sioux Center Ambulance Squad.

He says they believe that fireworks landing on the roof started the fire on the roof, which was made of shake shingles.

Chief Van Holland reports that “a big chunk of the roof” was damaged in the fire and will need to be replaced. However, he says damage inside the home was minimal and was limited to water damage.

He says they used about 100 gallons of water to fight the fire, and the 45 to 50 firefighters who responded were on the scene for about two hours.

A couple of hours later, Sioux Center firefighters were called to a fire alarm at the Sioux Center Health Hospital. Van Holland says that call turned out to be a false alarm, caused by system trouble at the hospital.
