Freak Accident Lands One In Hospital

Doon, Iowa — A Rock Rapids woman was taken to a hospital after what you might call a “freak” accident on Wednesday, February 14, 2018.

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office reports that about 10:40 a.m., their emergency center received a report from a driver that an object had come through her windshield. The location of the accident was the 2800 mile of 260th Street, or A52 just west of Doon. They tell us that deputies responded to the scene and located a black 2004 Chevrolet Equinox parked on the side of the roadway. The Equinox had a handle from a large ratchet strap stuck in the windshield.

The Sheriff’s Office says 33-year-old Sharai Garcia of Rock Rapids, was identified as the driver of the Equinox. At the scene the sheriff’s office also located a 2002 Freightliner truck tractor that had been pulling a load of round bales. The driver of the Freightliner was identified as 57-year-old Wayne Den Hartog of Sheldon.

An investigation determined that the ratchet strap holding the round bales broke resulting the handle becoming lodged in the windshield and two of the round bales rolling off on to the roadway.

The Lyon County Ambulance took Garcia to Sanford Rock Rapids.

Den Hartog was cited on a charge of spilling loads on a highway. The sheriff’s office says the Doon Fire Department, Doon Rescue Unit, Lyon County Ambulance, and the Lyon County Engineers Office assisted them at the scene.
