George FD Responds To Chimney Fire

George, Iowa — It could have ended much worse — so says George Fire Chief Bill Sprock about a fire call they had on Tuesday, December 26th.

Sprock says they were called out in the 5 p.m. hour to the call of a chimney fire in George at 405 East Boiler Avenue.

He says by the time they got there, the homeowner had the fire out already. He says they did not see any signs of active fire, but they got out their thermal camera and made sure there were no hot spots or hidden smoldering spots.

He says damage was limited to the chimney. He says the top of the smokestack was discolored due to fire. He says they were there about 20 to 25 minutes.

Sprock suggests that everyone who uses their fireplace have it inspected yearly and keep on hand a Chimfex-type product that can be thrown in the fireplace when there is a chimney fire. He says these type of products produce a lot of smoke which starves the chimney fire of oxygen.
