Hartley Man Faces Felony Burglary Charge

Hartley, Iowa — A Hartley man faces a Felony Burglary charge in the aftermath of an incident early Tuesday evening near Hartley.

According to court documents, an O’Brien County Deputy arrested 52-year old Billy Joe Engelkes after being summoned to a rural Hartley address.

According to court records, Engelkes allegedly forced entry into the residence through the front door. The home’s occupant reportedly told deputies that she was in fear for her safety. Court records indicate that, once inside the residence, Engelkes is accused of knocking the phone from the victim’s hands several times, as she attempted to contact law enforcement for assistance.

Authorities say the responding O’Brien County Deputy placed Engelkes under arrest on a charge of Burglary in the 3rd Degree, which is a Class D Felony.

Online court records indicate that Engelkes made his initial court appearance on the charge, and applied for a court-appointed attorney. Court records say that application was granted.

His next court appearance is a Preliminary Hearing, which is currently scheduled for 9:30 am on Tuesday, July 17th.
