Home Damaged, Cats Lost In Hawarden Fire

Hawarden, Iowa– A home was damaged and three cats were lost in a fire on Friday, December 14, 2018 in Hawarden.

According to Hawarden Fire Chief Duane Schiefen, about 4:45 p.m., the Hawarden Fire Department was called to the report of smoke in the house at 1100 Tenth Street in Hawarden.

The chief says the fire department saw flames when they entered the home.

Schiefen says three cats were lost in the blaze.

The Ireton Fire Department automatically assists the Hawarden Fire Department on structure fire calls, and vice versa.

The chief says they suspect that the outlet on the stove may have been the origin of the fire.

Chief Schiefen says there was moderate smoke damage to the house.

He says they only used about five gallons of water to fight the fire, and the approximately 25 firefighters who responded were on the scene for about an hour.
