Kansas Man Faces Multiple Charges Following Sunday Evening Pursuit

Hospers, Iowa — A 58-year old Kansas man was arrested after leading an Iowa State Trooper on a brief pursuit near Hospers Sunday evening.

According to Iowa State Patrol Trooper Jeff Zylstra, he attempted to stop a vehicle on Highway 60 near Hospers, but the vehicle fled. Zylstra says the pursuit lasted for about three miles, at which point the driver finally pulled over.

Trooper Zylstra arrested the vehicle’s driver, 58-year old David Wayne Schurle, of Pomona, Kansas, and transported him to the Sioux County Jail at Orange City. Zylstra says the charges against Schurle include: Speeding, 1st Offense Operating While Intoxicated, Open Container, Failure to Obey a Traffic Control Device, and Felony Eluding.

Zylstra tells KIWA that during the brief pursuit, Schurle is alleged to have driven more than 25-mph over the speed limit. He says that, combined with the Operating While Intoxicated charge combine to make the Eluding charge a Class D Felony.

Zylstra was assisted at the scene of the arrest by a Sioux County Deputy, and two other troopers.
