Alton, Iowa — An Alton man was hospitalized with a gunshot wound early Sunday morning.
According to Orange City/Alton Police, their officers were dispatched to an Alton residence shortly before 1:30 am Sunday for a discharge of a firearm. When officers and medical personnel arrived they found Fredrick Dykhuizen with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. Dykhuizen was taken to the Orange City Health System Hospital, and later transferred to a Sioux City hospital.
Police say that preliminary investigation indicates that Dykhuizen accidentally shot himself while handling the gun.
The Orange City Police Department was assisted by the Alton Ambulance, Orange City Ambulance, and the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office.
