Sheldon Police Investigating False Robbery Report

Sheldon, Iowa — Sheldon police are investigating an incident that happened early Monday in Sheldon.

Sheldon Police Chief Lyle Bolkema says authorities received a phone call in the wee hours of Monday, reporting a robbery at Casey’s West in Sheldon. Dispatchers reportedly checked with the convenience store and discovered that they had received a false report.

At the time the report was called in, a Sheldon police officer, on routine patrol, was following a vehicle as it drove around town. Bolkema says the police department is operating on the idea that the person in the vehicle being followed by the officer had called in the robbery report, thinking that would cause the officer to stop following them, and respond to the reported robbery.

Bolkema says the incident remains under investigation.
