Three-Vehicle Chain-Reaction Construction Zone Crash Sends Pair To Hospital

Sanborn, Iowa — Two women were transported to the Sanford Sheldon Medical Center following a 3-vehicle chain-reaction crash that happened in the Highway 18 construction zone, at the intersection of Highway 18 and Oriole Avenue late Monday afternoon.

According to the crash report from the O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office, one-lane travel was in process in the work zone. The report says that, as vehicles approached the Oriole Avenue intersection, they were stopped by attendants directing traffic, and awaiting the return of the Pilot Car.

The report states that eastbound vehicles were beginning to stack up on Highway 18, at the Oriole Avenue intersection. It goes on to say that a 2005 Chevrolet Equinox, driven by 19-year old Stephanie Paden, of Hampton IA, stopped at the back of the line. The report says that a 2014 Ford Escape, driven by 26-year old Taryn Godberson, of Sanborn, stopped behind Paden’s SUV. Deputies say a 2013 Chevrolet Traverse, driven by 28-year old Chelsey Zearing, of Sanborn was slowing for traffic when she looked ahead at the construction zone, taking her eyes off the vehicle in front of her. Zearing reportedly told authorities that she redirected her attention, only to discover that the vehicles in front of her were stopped. According to the report, Zearing was unable to stop in time to prevent rear-ending Godbersen’s Ford, pushing it into the rear of the Paden Chevrolet.

Both Paden and her passenger, 47-year old Tammy Arends of Hampton IA, were transported to the Sanford Sheldon Medical Center by Sanborn Ambulance for treatment of their injuries.

Damage to Paden’s Chevrolet was estimated at $15-hundred, while Godbersen’s Ford sustained an estimated $4-thousand damage, and Zearing’s Chevy received an estimated $7-thousand damage, according to authorities.

Zearing was reportedly ticketed for Failure To Maintain Control.
