UPDATE: Two Dead, Two Hurt After Car Breaks Through Ice On Storm Lake

Storm Lake, Iowa — Some more information has been released on the tragic incident in which a car fell through the ice on Storm Lake Sunday afternoon.

Buena Vista County Sheriff Kory Elston tells KIWA that the adult victim was 40-year old Zackary Newlon of Anthon, Iowa. Elston says the second victim was Newlon’s 8-year old son. The other two children were Newlon’s daughters, ages 9 and 5.

Elston says investigators don’t know why Newlon and the children were driving on the frozen lake, and he says, “we may never know.”

The two young girls were airlifted to a Sioux Falls hospital Sunday afternoon, and no further condition report is available.

Storm Lake, Iowa — Two people are dead, and two others hospitalized after their car fell through the ice on Storm Lake late Sunday afternoon.

According to the Buena Vista County Sheriff’s Office, The Buena Vista County Communications Center received a call that a vehicle had gone through the ice on Storm Lake. The Buena Vista Sheriff’s Office, Storm Lake Police Department, Storm Lake Fire Department, and Buena Vista Regional Medical Center Ambulance all responded to the call.

According to authorities, deputies, police officers and firefighters went out onto the ice and located one adult male, along with three small children who were all brought to shore, and transported to the hospital. Authorities say the adult male and one of the children were later pronounced dead. The other two children were airlifted to a Sioux Falls Hospital.

The names of the deceased are not being released at this time, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies say the incident remains under investigation by the Buena Vista County Sheriff’s Office and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
