Two Seriously Injured In Icy Crash

O’Brien County, Iowa — Slippery road conditions are said to have contributed to a two-vehicle crash between Sheldon and Sanborn that sent two to the hospital Thursday evening.

Shortly before 6:30 Thursday evening (November 8th) O’Brien County authorities were called to the scene of a two-vehicle crash on Highway 18, near Oriole Avenue.

According to the crash report, a 2009 Chevrolet pickup, driven by 36-year old Boon Xiang, of Colfax, Wisconsin, went out of control on a frost, snow and ice covered bridge, and came to rest halfway into the north ditch, with the front end of the truck on the shoulder facing south.

Deputies say another motorist had stopped to help pull the pickup out of the ditch, when a westbound 1998 Mercury, driven by 19-year old Jessica Johnson of Melvin, crossed the slick bridge, went out of control, and struck the Xiong pickup. According to authorities, Xinog had just entered the cab of his pickup and was preparing to get pulled out of the ditch when the crash occurred.

Deputies say Johnson had to be mechanically extricated from her car, and was transported to the Sanford Sheldon Medical Center by the Sheldon Community Ambulance Team with what the crash report lists as serious injuries.

According to the report, Xiong was also seriously injured in the crash, and transported to Sanford Sheldon by the Sanborn Ambulance.

Deputies estimate $35-hundred damage to Johnson’s Mercury, and $10-thousand to Xiong’s pickup.

Deputies were assisted at the scene by the Sanborn Fire Department, Sanborn Ambulance, and SCAT.
