2nd Ward Council Seat Decided By Write-In

Ssheldon, Iowa — As we told you earlier, a Sheldon man was the victor in Tuesday’s municipal election, winning a Sheldon City Council seat for which there were no names on the ballot.

There were no names appearing on the ballot for the Sheldon 2nd Ward seat, when incumbent Randy Fonkert decided not to seek reelection. O’Brien County Auditor Barb Rohwer says three names were written-in on 2nd Ward ballots, with the top vote-getter, Shawn Broesder, garnering 6 write-in votes. The other two individuals whose names were written in, Joshua Kraayenbrink and Lyle VandenBerg each received 2 write-in votes.

Since Broesder received the most write-in votes, he was elected to fill that council seat, should he choose to do so. Broesder stopped in to the KIWA Studios late Wednesday afternoon and said he’s excited to serve on the Sheldon City Council.

He says the write-in campaign arose from a conversation with his wife.

O’Brien County Auditor Barb Rohwer tells KIWA that, had Broesder declined to accept the position, Kraayenbrink and VandenBerg would both have had their names thrown into a hat, with a drawing deciding the winner. She says that, if the situation arose where none of the three wanted to serve on the council, the council itself would have had to appoint a representative for the 2nd Ward seat.
