Sew It, Grow It, Show It at the Lyon County Fair

Rock Rapids, Iowa — It’s about time for the Lyon County Fair to start in Rock Rapids. A few preliminary events are taking place now.

Earlier this week, the Communications Event-Educational Presentations, Clothing Event-Clothing Selection, Fashion Revue, $15 Challenge and the 4-H and Clover Kids Non-livestock (Static) Judging took place in the Commercial building at the fairgrounds.

The actual opening day is Monday but on Saturday, July 14, 2018, from 9:00 to 11:00 AM, the open class entries registration will be on the east side of the 4-H building for textiles, hand crafts, fashion, crafts, canned goods, oven products, and foods. Fair officials tell us that all baked goods will be judged at the entry time. A sample will be kept for display and the rest of the product can be taken home at entry time. Also at that same time (9-11 a.m.) will be the weigh-in for the open-class beef show, with the actual open class beef show to be at 1 p.m.

Several years ago the County Fair Gospel Concert used to be held at the fairgrounds. But it was eventually moved indoors into the air conditioning. That continues to this day. This year the concert will be presented at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 15th, by the Triumphant Sound Quartet. It will be at the Rock Rapids First Reformed Church on Highway 75.

Livestock shows, a pet show, the fair queen contest, several meals featuring beef and pork, historical demonstrations, a spelling bee, two kinds of car races, a tractor pull, commercial exhibits, and much, much more are planned next week for the 2018 Lyon County Fair, which runs through Thursday, July 19th. Plus, this year the Lyon County Fair is celebrating 125 years.
