Winner Declared, But Nobody Loses

Sheldon, Iowa — The team of the Sheldon Police Department and Sheldon Community Ambulance Team have come away with the win again in the annual Heroes Behind The Badges Blood Drive.

After the first round of the blood drive two weeks ago, it was thought that the total number of blood donations in the annual drive this year might break a record. Then the icy weather hit on the second and final day of the competition on Monday, February 19th, says Rita Nelson with the Community Blood Bank.

Nelson says that the unexpectedly-high number of donations during round one helped them finish with a respectable number of donations.

At “the half” after the drive on February 7th, there were 27 votes for PD/SCAT and 22 for FD/EMA. The final score after yesterday’s drive was PD/SCAT 35, EMA/FD 30, so each team picked up eight more votes yesterday.

Blood bank officials tell us that each donation can save up to three lives, so the 65 pints collected could save up to 195 lives.

Incidentally, it looks like the Fire Department and EMA are due for a win, as the Police and Ambulance have won the past three years in a row.

2017: PD/SCAT 48, EMA/FD 34
2016: PD/SCAT 21, EMA/FD 11
