Annual Heroes Behind The Badges Blood Drive Set For February 16 In Sheldon
Date posted - February 7, 2012
The annual Heroes Behind the Badges Blood Drive is coming up again in Sheldon.
Mark your calendar for Thursday, February 16. Ken Ver Steeg, spokesman for the Community Blood Bank says that it’s a friendly competition between two teams of Sheldon emergency responders. One team is the Sheldon Police Department and the Sheldon Community Ambulance Team. The second is the Sheldon Fire Company and Sheldon Emergency Management Agency. He says the teams attempt to recruit the highest number of blood donors.
Ver Steeg says it’s always close. Last year the Fire Company and EMA had one more donation vote than the Police and SCAT. It ended 29 to 28.
He says it doesn’t take much blood to save a life.
He says they could use some more donors as well. That’s because people who want to donate sometimes are prevented from doing so because they have a cold or flu at the time the bloodmobile is in town.
Ver Steeg also says they encourage donors to support their blood type. Especially if you have a rare blood type, your donation is always welcome. But they need all blood types to keep the supply where it should be in case of an emergency.
The fun competition between the departments will be held on Thursday, February 16 from 11 AM to 2 PM and 3 PM to 6:00 PM at the Community Services Building in Sheldon. The public is encouraged to designate their blood donation in honor of the department of their choice. The department with the most donations will receive the traveling trophy and bragging rights for the year.
