Be Proactive Against Identity Theft

Sheldon, Iowa — People need to be vigilant in protecting themselves from being a victim of Identity Theft. That was the message delivered by Jan Monahan, a Family Finance Specialist with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, when she spoke to SCDC members during their monthly luncheon Thursday.

Monahan says there are some very simple things you can do to avoid becoming a victim.

Monahan also talked about phishing emails, emails that may look legitimate, but are designed to get you to reply with your personal information.

She says there are steps you need to take if you find out your personal information, or financial accounts, have been compromised.

Monahan says you should check your bank statements and credit card bills, and investigate any unusual activity.
