Bethel Congregation Decides Not To Repair Current Building

fire-at-bethelSheldon, Iowa — Members of Bethel Reformed Church in Sheldon have made a difficult decision after a fire almost half a year ago.

According to Pastor Dave Van Kley of Bethel Reformed, church members have decided not to continue repairs of their current church building.

He tells us about the fire.

He says it started in a malfunctioning light fixture and had been burning for a while when it was discovered.

Rev. Van Kley says that as a result, they have been worshiping in the Sheldon High School Auditorium and using the commons there for fellowship after church.

The pastor says some initial repairs were made to the building, but other factors had to be considered.

Van Kley says in January the consistory presented the available information and came to the conclusion that it was unwise to put substantial money into the current building. He says this past Sunday, they asked the congregation what they thought should be done, and they agreed with that assessment.

Pastor Van Kley says that this decision was only about whether they should continue with their old building. He says now that they’ve decided the answer is “no,” they have to make other decisions. He says a number of options have come up, including building a new facility and renovating an old building. He says for now, they will keep worshiping at the high school and will be praying for the Lord’s leading.
