Man Drives Through Railroad Construction Area

railroad crossing signMaurice, Iowa — An Orange City man’s vehicle was damaged as well as a railroad crossing on Thursday, October 1st near Maurice.

The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office reports that at about 7:52 am, 19-year-old Diego De Lira of Orange City was driving a 2006 Nissan X-Terra eastbound on Highway 10, two miles north of Maurice. According to the report, De Lira attempted to cross the BNSF Railway Railroad crossing. The report continues that the railroad crossing was under construction and De Lira struck unprepared railway rails in the crossing as he attempted to drive through the railroad construction area.

The Nissan received $10,000 damage; the railroad crossing received $10,000 damage.

No injuries were reported.

De Lira was cited for failing to obey a traffic control device.
