UPDATE: Names Released In Plymouth County Accident

Le Mars, Iowa — The Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office has released the names of the victims in an accident on Sunday morning, January 1st.

The Sheriff’s Office reports that 25-year-old Samantha Joann Derner of Sioux City received fatal injuries in the crash. Also injured in the crash was 25-year-old Scott Allen Dennis of Sioux City. They report the accident remains under investigation.

Akron, Iowa — One person has died and one was injured in an accident on Sunday, January 1st in Plymouth County.

According to the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office, they were notified about an accident about 7:40 a.m., along Highway 12, a few miles north of the Woodbury/Plymouth County line near Akron. They report that when responders arrived, it was determined that a man needed immediate medical help — he was taken to Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City by Akron Ambulance. A woman was deceased at the scene.

The Sheriff’s Office reports that a preliminary investigation at the scene has been able to determine that a 2003 Mitsubishi was northbound on Highway 12 when the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to enter the west ditch. They say it appears that the vehicle rolled several times before coming to rest. The driver was extricated by the Akron Fire Department and taken to Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars. It is unknown at this time why the driver lost control of the vehicle. It is suspected that alcohol may have been a factor in the accident.

The Plymouth County Medical Examiner along with the State Medical Examiner’s Office are assisting with the investigation. No information regarding the injured or the deceased is being released, until next of kin have been notified. The Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office and the Iowa State Patrol are continuing their investigation into the single-vehicle crash,

Plymouth County Sheriff’s Deputies, Iowa State Patrol troopers, Akron Firefighters, Akron Ambulance personnel and Siouxland Paramedics assisted at the scene.
