Building At Buena Vista County Fairgounds Destroyed By Fire Early Saturday

Alta, Iowa — One of the buildings at the Buena Vista County Fairgrounds was destroyed in a fire early on Saturday morning (7/14).

The Buena Vista County Communications Center reports they received a 911 call shortly after 12:30 AM, that the concessions stand building at the Buena Vista County Fairgrounds was on fire. The Alta Fire Department and Buena Vista County Deputies were dispatched. Upon their arrival, they saw flames coming from the northwest corner of the building and up into the roof. The Fire Department was able to contain the fire to just that building and had it under control within approximately 20 minutes.

The Buena Vista County Fair was in its third day and the concession stand had been heavily used Wednesday and Thursday nights, but had not been open on Friday evening.

A joint investigation by the Sheriff’s Office fire investigator and the Alta Fire Department reveals that an electrical malfunction inside the building was the cause.

The damage was contained to the building and contents, however there were other food vendors next to this building that had electrical hookups for frozen foods and those foods are possibly a total loss also. Total loss of the building and contents is estimated at approximately $80,000.

The Alta Fire Dept was on scene for approximately 2 hours with the investigation concluding by about 7 AM.
