Camp Autumn Receives Fishing Gear From Fishing Club

Sutherland, Iowa — A therapeutic day camp for children, opening in June near Sutherland has received some fishing equipment for campers from an area fishing club.

Named after Autumn Elgersma of Orange City who lost her life at the hands of her babysitter, Camp Autumn is a part of Autumn’s Center in Spencer, which is also named after Elgersma, and helps troubled kids throughout the region. Autumn’s Center is an outreach of Season’s Center in Spencer.

Camp Autumn received the donation of fishing supplies from the Iowa Great Lakes Fishing Club. The day camp is home to a 30-acre lake, where many of the outdoor camp activities, like fishing, will take place.

The Iowa Great Lakes Fishing Club donated 25 rods and reels with tackle, as well as fully-stocked tackle bags. The club is also planning to volunteer at the camp and maintain the fishing supplies throughout the summer.

Kim Scorza, CEO/President of Seasons Center says they are excited to have the support of the Iowa Great Lakes Fishing Club in helping Camp Autumn children learn about fishing. She says that fishing is a great way to practice skills of relaxation and problem-solving, and promotes positive peer interactions. Through the generous gifts of fishing equipment, Scorza says that some of the youth will be able to experience fishing for the first time, which she says is “absolutely wonderful.”

Terry Thomsen, Vice President of the Iowa Great Lakes Fishing Club says that their club is all about getting young people into fishing. He says that the future of their fishing hobby lies with the youth.
