Chief Deputy VanderStoep Will Run For Lyon County Sheriff By Petition

Rock Rapids, Iowa — Lyon County Chief Deputy Stewart VanderStoep was defeated in the Republican primary for Lyon County Sheriff. But he’s not letting that stop him from running for the Sheriff’s position.

Lyon County Sheriff Blythe Bloemendaal is retiring at the end of the year, and a new Sheriff will take his spot. Deputy Rick Bos won the Republican nomination earlier this year by just nine votes. Vanderstoep says about 2700 people voted.

He tells us what’s happened since the primary.

So, VanderStoep’s name will be on the ballot as “nominated by petition”. But he assures us that doesn’t mean he’s any less of a Republican. He says the sheriff’s position is not a political one in the first place.

VanderStoep tells us about his philosophy of law enforcement.

VanderStoep says as sheriff, he would want to continue to work closely with the media and update the Sheriff’s web site so that they can do more, possibly including a list of recent arrests.

He says there are differences between him and his opponent.

The general election is slated for Tuesday, November 6th.
