Cooler Temperatures Remind Us To Think Propane Safety

Northwest Iowa — With the cooler temperatures of fall comes the knowledge that we’ll soon be firing up the propane furnace, if we haven’t already. But we need to know what to do if we smell propane in our home or building.

Aaron Alons is Heating Manager for Sanborn Propane, and he says the first thing to do if you smell propane is to leave the building immediately.

Alons says propane has a very distinctive odor.

He says if your propane furnace isn’t properly vented it can introduce carbon monoxide into your home.

Alons urges you to NOT let your propane tank run out.

He says some older furnaces and other appliances have pilot lights, and you should be able to light them yourself.

To maintain maximum efficiency and safety, Alons recommends that you have a professional check out your propane furnace and other appliances every year.
