Council To Hold Hearing On Property Tax Levy

Sheldon, Iowa — When the Sheldon City Council meets this Wednesday, March 7th, they’ll hold three public hearings.  The first will be on the Fiscal Year 2018-2019 Budget.  City Manager Sean Hutchison tells KIWA that the proposed budget will result in a total tax levy of $13.87 per thousand dollar valuation of real estate, with the exception of agricultural.  For example, if you own a home with an assessed value of $100-thousand, the additional levy would amount to a $26.60 increase over the annual taxes that you currently pay.

The other public hearings concern the new Wastewater Treatment Facility and the Floyd Industrial Park Infrastructure.  After each of these hearings the council will consider a resolution to approve the plans and specifications and then consider a resolution awarding the contract for construction.

Another agenda item concerns funding of the proposed Sheldon Crossing Recreational Trail.  This proposed trail would wrap around the Sheldon Crossing Pond and connect to the existing trail system.  The Council will consider applying for funding through Iowa’s Transportation Alternatives Program.  The City would be asking TAP for nearly $285-thousand to cover eighty percent of the estimated cost of the project, with local funding to cover the remaining nearly $95-thousand.

Wednesday’s meeting begins at 4:30 in the upper level of the Sheldon Community Services Center.
