Doon 5-year-old Safe After Mom Rescues Her From Sinking Pickup

Pouder's Pond PickupRock Valley, Iowa — A Doon woman’s 5-year-old daughter is safe after her mom rescued her from a pickup that was sinking into a pond near Rock Valley on Tuesday.

The Sioux County Communications Center received a report just before 10 PM of a vehicle that had entered Pouder’s Pond located at 1540 Pouder’s Pond Road, just north of Fairview, SD but on the Iowa side of the Big Sioux River.

Sioux County Deputies and Sioux County Conservation Officers responded.

Upon further investigation it was discovered that 29-year-old Rebecca Horton of Doon had been fishing at Pouder’s Pond. She reported that her five-year-old daughter entered her 1996 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup, which was parked near the boat ramp. The child disengaged the vehicle from park which caused it to start rolling backward toward the pond with the child still inside it. Horton was able to safely remove her daughter from
the vehicle as it entered the water, shortly before it became completely submerged.

No injuries were reported.

The next day, divers from the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team were able to successfully assist in the location and removal of the vehicle. The Dodge was found by divers at a depth of about 15 feet underwater. A tow truck was used to remove the vehicle from the pond.

The Dodge sustained about $6500 in damages.
