East Elementary Project May Be Completed In Time For Start Of 2014-2015 School Year
Date posted - September 11, 2013
Sheldon, IA — There is an 80 percent chance that the Sheldon East Elementary Construction/Renovation Project may be completed in time for the start of next school year. Superintendent Robin Spears reported that information to the School Board during their regular monthly meeting Wednesday evening.
Spears says the project’s General Contractor laid out a timetable in a Wednesday construction meeting. Spears says the timetable calls for asbestos removal from the lunch room ceiling and floor to be completed over the Christmas holiday break. Asbestos is to be removed from the tunnels in March. He told the Board that the District should have a small window in August next year that will allow them to get moved into the building, and get everything ready to start school the day after Labor Day next year in the completed building.
Spears also reported to the Board on the Ball Field/Recreation Project. He told the Board that Board members Randy Merley and Susan Rensink will be meeting with representatives of the City of Sheldon in the near future to finalize specifications for the project. He says that after the specs have been finalized, they will be brought to the Board and to the City Council for final approval, before they begin the bidding process. On a related note, Spears says that, although a sidewalk along Highway 18 on the north side of the new fields is not part of the project, one will be installed once work on the ball field project is done.
The Board also approved a change in Roofing Contractor for the East Elementary Project. Superintendent Spears said the change was necessary after the original low bidder, Winkler Roofing, voluntarily withdrew their winning bid after they discovered that they may not be able to obtain the product necessary to do the work as specified in the contract. Spears said that H&S Roofing from Spencer has now agreed to match the original Winkler bid for the job. The Board unanimously approved the change.
In other action, the Board approved Open Enrollment Applications for a trio of siblings who have recently moved from the Sibley-Ocheyedan District into the Sheldon District, but wish to open enroll back into the Sibley-Ocheyedan District.
They also approved contracts for: Ben Chestnut as 9th Grade Wrestling Coach; Dave Gross as Elementary ELL Associate; Monica Honkomp as Middle School Food Service Worker; Brooke Oldenkamp as EL Special Education Instructional Associate; and Nancy Rosenboom as the Elementary Principal’s Secretary, as well as dispatching several other agenda items.
The regular October meeting of the Board will be held Thursday, October 10th at 6:00 pm in the high school library.
