The Superior Fire Department was paged just before 7:40 AM on Wednesday (9/4/13) to a report of several hay bales on fire at Highway 9 & 71, approximately 3 miles west of Superior.
Upon arriving on scene, the fire department requested the Spirit Lake and Terril Fire Departments for assistance. Help was later requested from Estherville, Lake Park, Arnolds Park/Okoboji, Jackson (Minnesota) and Milford Fire Departments. Help was also requested from Sam Wedeking Excavating to move the burning bales away from the nearby buildings and out into an open pasture east of the residence.
Highway 9 & 71 was closed between 290th Avenue and the Jackson ‘Y’ due to the proximity of the bales to the highway and rerouted onto local gravel roads. The highway was re-opened at approximately 2:30 p.m.
Approximately 370 round bales owned by Dustin Lindsey were destroyed by the fire at an estimated cost of $73,000. It’s believed that the bales started on fire by spontaneous combustion as they were just put up approximately one month ago.
All fire units were clear from the scene at approximately 2:30 PM.
Authorities were warning people travelling in the area that there would be smoldering hay bales on the east side of the home for several days. They advised that drivers should be prepared to slow down in the event that the smoke affects the highway.
