El Nino Could Transition To La Nina

National Weather Service NWS logoNorthwest Iowa — The weather is an often-discussed topic here in northwest Iowa, and lately the subject has been about the powerful El Nino phenomenon that has brought us the heavy winter storms we’ve had in the past few weeks.

Jeff Chapman is a forecaster with emphasis on Climatology at the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls.  He says this winter’s powerful El Nino could transition to a La Nina phenomenon.

Chapman says if a La Nina system develops it could lead to frigid temperatures next winter.

He says that, for now, we should just enjoy the weather we have, since any impact from a La Nina is still several months away.

The current El Nino phenomenon sparked multiple blizzard events here in northwest Iowa this winter.
