Ewinger Pleads Guilty, Sentenced To Prison

Sibley, Iowa — A former Sibley-Ocheyedan teacher and coach has admitted he sexually abused a 10-year old student in his middle school classroom back in 2015.

Authorities say Kyle Thomas Ewinger changed his plea to guilty Monday in Osceola County District Court, to an amended charge of Sexual Abuse in the 3rd Degree, a Class C Felony. In pleading guilty, Ewinger admitted in open court to performing a sex act by force or against the will of the 10-year old on October 3, 2015. Ewinger was the victim’s teacher at the time.

According to authorities, after the Court accepted Ewinger’s guilty plea, he requested immediate sentencing, and the court complied, sentencing Ewinger to up to 10-years in an Iowa prison. In addition, a special sentence committed Ewinger to the custody of the Director of the Iowa Department of Corrections for the remainder of his life, with eligibility for parole. Ewinger was also ordered to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.

Earllier Ewinger had been convicted in a Nebraska court for sexually abusing a different child. He was sentenced to 55 to 85-years for that crime, with a minimum of 35-years before being eligible for parole. Monday, the Osceola County court ordered that Ewinger’s Iowa sentence be served consecutively with his Nebraska sentence. That means that, upon Ewinger being paroled in Nebraska at some future date, Iowa authorities will then take custody of him and he will then begin to serve his Iowa sentence.

Authorities say the case was investigated by the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office, and prosecuted by Osceola County Attorney Nolan McGowan, with the assistance of Assistant Iowa Attorney General Coleman McAllister.

The civil lawsuit brought by the mother of the victim against the Sibley-Ocheyedan School District in connection with Ewinger’s crime, is scheduled for trial in Osceola County District Court later this year.
