Fairs Continue In Primghar, Rock Rapids

Rock Rapids and Primghar, Iowa — It’s county fair time in northwest Iowa. The Sioux and Osceola county fairs were last week. This week it’s the Lyon and O’Brien county fairs.

In O’Brien County in Primghar this Tuesday, they’ll start things out at 7 a.m. with an O’Brien County 4H Foundation Pancake Breakfast, which will run until 10. Feeder Calves must be checked in by 7 a.m. At 8:00 a.m., it’ll be time for the Beef Show. From 9 to 11:30 a.m., it’s Steam Punk Camp in the Administration Building. The petting zoo opens at 10.

Tuesday afternoon activities include a traveling artist in the administration building from
3:00-4:30 p.m. The Bucket/Bottle Calf Show starts at 4:00 p.m. From 4 to 8, your kids can ride Kock’s Mini Train and have ferris wheel rides. Registration for Pedal Tractor Pull opens at 5 p.m., with the pull itself getting underway at 5:30 p.m. The entertainment for the evening is singer Phil Vandel, and that show starts at 7:30.

At the Lyon County Fair in Rock Rapids, the fun continues Tuesday with Kids Day. First on the schedule is the 4H and FFA Horse Show at 8. At 9, it’s the 4H and FFA Dairy Show. Commercial Exhibit Booths, 4-H and open class buildings open at 11. The Classic Tractor and Equipment Display opens at noon.

In the afternoon, TB Creations balloons and face painting will be on the grounds from 1 to 6. Robbie Pfunders’ mountain bike trails stunt show will take place three times during the day. From 1:00 to 8:00 p.m., the Lyon County Historical Society Display and Demonstrations will resume in the Round Barn. They’ll show how to make Spek n’ Dickin, Ole Ballen, Lefsa, rope, taffy, and more — all things that were done in the olden days.

From 1 to 4, it’s the Bob Bohm magic shows. The 4H and FFA Sheep and Goat show starts at 2, with the goat show at 3:30. The Kids’ Pedal Pull will start at 5. At 5:30 p.m., the Youth Garden Tour will take place at the ISU Research Garden. Tuesday night’s featured meal is a Pork Chop Meal sponsored by Lyon County Pork Producers from 5:30 to 7. The ISU Research Garden Tour starts at 6. At 7 p.m., the 4H and FFA Beef Show, including penned cow and calf, calf, and beef pen of three starts. Also starting at 7 are the car races at the Rapid Speedway on the fairgrounds.
