Farrowing Demonstration At Lyon County Fair Draws Crowd

Rock Rapids, Iowa — The Lyon County Fair is wrapping up in Rock Rapids this Thursday.

One of the highlights of the fair this week has been the chance to see baby pigs being born in a live farrowing demonstration, which drew plenty of onlookers.

Elaine Hinsch, who serves on the fair board, tells us what’s up for the fourth and final day of the fair this Thursday.

The historical demonstrations in the round barn every day feature making ole bolen (which is a Dutch pastry similar to a doughnut hole with fruit), making spec ‘n dicken (which is a German pastry similar to a sweet pancake with meat), making lefse (which is a Norwegian pastry similar to a potato tortilla), making butter, making rope, and pulling taffy. They also demonstrate spinning, tatting, knitting, quilting, table games, and cow milking.
