February, 2017 Could Go Down As Warmest Ever

thermometer-cold-20-belowSheldon, Iowa — At this point February, 2017 may go down as one of the warmest ever.  The average high temperature at the KIWA Weather Center so far this month has been 41-degrees.  That’s a full 10-degrees above the normal high of 31.  While we have seen some unseasonably warm temperatures, we’ve only broken on record high for this year, that was Wednesday morning (February 22nd) when we measured the 24-hour high at 66-degrees, which surpassed the old record of 62, which had stood since 1909.

Our low temperatures were considerably warmer than normal, as well.  Our average low temp so far this month has been 20-degrees, while the normal low is a chilly 12-degrees.  No record lows have been set in February thus far.  The record for the coldest February day is 38-degrees below zero, which was set in 1899.

No snow has fallen on Sheldon thus far in February, though the forecast has that situation changing this week.  During a normal February we would  receive 6.8-inches of snow, but so far this February we have seen nary a flake.
