Date posted - September 11, 2012
Washington, DC — Today is Patriot Day. Both President Obama and Governor Branstad have ordered flags to be flown at half-staff from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. today to honor those who perished in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
Every year, the President proclaims September 11 as Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance.
President Obama is calling upon all departments, agencies, and instrumentalities of the United States to display the flag of the United States at half-staff on Patriot Day. He also invites the Governors of the United States and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and interested organizations and individuals to join in this observance. Obama is also calling upon the people of the United States to participate in community service in honor of those our Nation lost, to observe this day with appropriate ceremonies and activities, including remembrance services, and to observe a moment of silence to honor the innocent victims who perished as a result of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
Governor Branstad has also proclaimed that all flags will be at half-staff on the state Capitol building and on flag displays in the Capitol complex, and upon all public buildings, grounds, and facilities throughout the state. Individuals, businesses, schools, municipalities, counties and other government subdivisions are encouraged to fly the flag at half-staff for the same length of time as a sign of respect.
