Flags To Fly At Half-Staff In Honor Of Patriot Day

Statewide Iowa — As we solemnly remember September 11th today, the President and the Governor of Iowa have ordered flags in their control to be flown at half-staff.

Today marks the 16th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon, and United Airlines Flight 93, which crashed in suburban Pennsylvania. Patriot Day serves as a remembrance of the lives lost on that September morning.

President Donald Trump has proclaimed September 11, 2017, as Patriot Day. He called upon all departments, agencies, and instrumentalities of the United States to display the flag of the United States at half-staff today in honor of the individuals who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. Trump also called upon the people of the United States to participate in community service in honor of those our Nation lost, to observe this day with appropriate ceremonies and activities, including remembrance services, and to observe a moment of silence beginning at 8:46 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time to honor the innocent victims who perished as a result of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds has also ordered all flags in Iowa to be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset in honor of Patriot Day.

Flags will be at half-staff on the State Capitol Building and on flag displays in the Capitol Complex. Flags will also be half-staff on all public buildings, grounds and facilities throughout the state.

Individuals, businesses, schools, municipalities, counties and other government subdivisions are encouraged to fly the flag at half-staff for the same length of time as a sign of respect.
