UPDATE: Hartley Hard Hit By Flash Flooding

Hartley, Iowa — The torrential rains and flash flooding that hit northwest Iowa yesterday were extremely devastating to the community of Hartley.

O’Brien County Emergency Management Coordinator Jerad Johnson tells KIWA that Hartley’s Mayor has signed a Local Disaster Declaration, due to the flooding. He says the Iowa Department of Homeland Security has been notified that the City of Hartley would like to activate the Iowa Individual Assistance Program to help Hartley residents impacted by the flash flooding. Johnson says Hartley officials are hoping that the assistance request reaches Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds’ desk today (Friday, June 15th).

According to Johnson, Hartley homeowners may put damaged flooring carpet and products onto the curbside of the street, and Hartley City crews will pick up those damaged materials when they are able.

If your Hartley home received damage from the flash flooding, you’re assked to call the Hartley City Office at 712-928-2240 to report that damage.

Johnson says the American Red Cross delivered cleaning kits Thursday evening to the Hartley City Hall. He says Hartley residents may pick up a cleaning kit today (Friday) if their home was impacted from the flash flood.

Northwest Iowa — A lot of rain in a short time. That appears to be the cause of flash flooding in northwest Iowa.

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for portions of Lyon, Osceola, and O’Brien counties on Thursday morning. They said that Sibley, Hartley, Sanborn, Primghar, Little Rock, Ashton, Melvin, and Archer would experience flooding.

They reported that 6.5 inches of rain fell from thunderstorms in Hartley. Another report of over five inches came from Hartley, with over four inches reported in Sibley. Reports from around the area are that six inches fell in the Cloverdale area, with creeks coming out of their banks and water running over roads in the Sanborn and Hartley areas, including Highway 18 east of Hartley. Another report from Sanborn was that they received five and a half inches of rain. A report from Sutherland included 1.4 inches by 7:30 a.m. The heavy rain reports continue into Clay County, with two and three-inch reports common. Worthington, Minnesota reported an inch and a half. Here in Sheldon, 2.2 inches of rain was reported, but it was a little spotty. One report from Sheldon was 1.17 inches, but another in Sheldon reported over 3 inches. There were also reports of hail up in Osceola County.

An eyewitness report from west of Sanborn reported extensive field flooding that could be seen from Highway 18. The report noted that the field was flooded for a quarter mile north of the highway and was almost a half mile wide.
