Four People Seriously Injured In Car Versus Train Crash In Alta

CN loco CNIC train locomotiveAlta, Iowa — Four people, two of them young children, were seriously injured in an accident with a train in Alta on Thursday, February 13th.

The Buena Vista County Sheriff’s Office reports that their preliminary investigation indicates that just before 4:30 Thursday afternoon, a car was travelling northbound on Main Street in Alta when it was struck by a westbound train coming through Alta. They say that it appears that all audible and visual warning signals were functioning properly.

When emergency crews got there, they found that four occupants of the car had been severely injured and had to be extricated from the car. All four were transported to the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center. Two of the victims were children ages 2 and 4. The children were then transported by helicopter to a pediatric trauma center in Sioux Falls.

The names of the victims are being withheld at this time, and their conditions are unknown.

The Iowa State Patrol, Aurelia and Storm Lake Police assisted on scene.
