Hawarden Woman Taken To Hospital After Accident

Hawarden, Iowa — A Hawarden woman was taken to the hospital after an accident in Hawarden on Wednesday, June 23, 2021.

The Hawarden Police Department reports that about 9:05 a.m., 54-year-old Millard Martin of Beresford was driving a 2007 Chevy pickup eastbound on Ninth Street in Hawarden. Seventy-six year-old Shirley Lael of Hawarden was northbound on Avenue E in a 2016 Ford.

The report says that Martin was stopped for the eastbound stop sign and failed to see Lael approaching from the south. As Martin pulled into the intersection, the report says he hit Lael’s car in the front driver’s side fender, causing her car to jump the curb and hit a tree.

The Hawarden Ambulance took Lael to Hawarden Regional Hospital.

Martin’s Chevy pickup sustained $4000 in damages, and Lael’s Ford sustained $8000 in damages.

Martin was charged with failure to yield from a stop sign.
