Horses Escape Injury In Boyden Area Barn Fire

Date posted - January 10, 2013

Fire LightbarBoyden, Iowa — Horses in a barn south of Boyden escaped injury in a barn fire on Wednesday afternoon.

Boyden Fire Chief Galen Blankers says they were called to the report of a barn on fire with horses inside at about 3:20 Wednesday afternoon. He says the fire was on a place two miles due south of Boyden, at 3420 Kennedy Avenue.

Blankers says when they pulled up, they saw smoke coming from the west side of the barn. However, he says the fire was not as bad as it could have been. He says the biggest problem was that the main columns of the barn were on fire. He says they fought an interior attack and put the fire out with a small amount of water, and then used pressure fans to ventilate the building.

The chief reports the horses were able to get out in time, and thanks to the quick response, they were able to put the fire out before it caused major damage. He says they did ask for help from the Sheldon Fire Company, just in case. They requested water and manpower from Sheldon. Blankers says as with any small town fire that happens during the day, the fire department is short on available volunteers, so it’s pretty common for them to call for help from another town in those situations.

He says an investigator from the State Fire Marshal’s office was there on Thursday and determined the cause of the fire to be accidental. Blankers says damage from smoke, fire, and water was probably less than $500.

The chief says crews were on scene for about an hour and forty minutes.
