Spencer, Iowa — A man convicted of first degree murder in the 1997 gang-style slaying of northwest Iowa teen Gregory “Sky” Erickson has been given the chance for parole.gavel_sxc

Now-33-year-old Ryan Wedebrand has been in prison for 16 years. He was convicted of taking part in the kidnapping, which happened in Spencer, and the murder, which happened in rural Petersburg Township, in Jackson County, Minnesota. Court records indicate the slaying was drug-related.

District Judge David Lester has resentenced Wedebrand to life in prison with the possibility for parole. Wedebrand took advantage of a new U.S. Supreme Court ruling that made it possible for anyone convicted as a juvenile to request re-sentencing.

Judge Lester’s ruling does not specify how soon Wedebrand could be eligible for parole.
