Inwood Man Dies In Accident Near Doon

fatal ambulance IIDoon, Iowa — An Inwood man died as the result of an accident in southwest Lyon County near Doon on Tuesday (6/18/13).

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office reports that about 5:05 PM on Tuesday (6/18), 79-year-old Gilbert and 75-year-old Betty Teunissen of Inwood were northbound on county road K30, three miles west of Doon. As they approached county road A52, there was a semi truck in the southbound lane driven by 55-year-old Duane Middle of Rock Valley. Middle was attempting to make a left-hand turn onto A52. Middle waited for another oncoming vehicle to pass through the intersection but did not see the Teunissen vehicle and started to turn in front of it. The vehicles collided in the intersection.

Gilbert Teunissen received life-threatening injuries and was transported to Avera Hospital in Sioux Falls by the Sanford Helicopter. He later passed away due to his injuries. Betty Teunissen’s injuries were described as non-incapacitating. She was transported by the Lyon County Ambulance.

Teunissen’s 2011 Toyota Avalon received about $15,000 in damage while the 2001 Freightliner semi owned by Hartland Farms of Doon received about $10,000 in damage. Middle was ticketed for failure to yield upon a left turn.

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Department was assisted by Doon Fire and Rescue, Sioux County Sheriff’s Office, Rock Valley Police Department, Iowa State Patrol, Lyon County Ambulance, and the Sanford Helicopter.
