Free Fishing Weekend in Iowa

UPDATE:
Northwest Iowa — Free fishing weekend is underway in Iowa. That means Iowans of any age can fish without a license until Sunday night, June 4th.

We had a chance to talk with Iowa Department of Natural Resources Conservation Officer Tait Anderson recently, and he tells us where the fish were biting over the Memorial Day weekend.

He tells us where that while an invasive weed species has been causing some issues, it is great for muskie habitat.

We asked Anderson — if he had any rules or safety tips that he wanted to highlight for people if they’re going to be out on northwest Iowa lakes.

Again, if you are an Iowa resident you don’t need a fishing license this weekend, but all fishing rules and limits still apply. Learn more about fishing and boating rules, limits, and events online at: www.iowadnr.gov.

Northwest Iowa — Always wanted to try your hand at fishing? This weekend might be your chance. Iowans can go fishing on any of the state’s lakes, rivers and streams for free this weekend, without having a fishing license.

The Free Fishing Days event begins this Friday and runs through Sunday (June 2-4). Joe Larscheid, chief of fisheries for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources tells us why they do a free fishing weekend every year.

He says that fishing is a wholesome activity that’s a lot of fun. Larscheid says the free fishing events are for Iowa residents only, but people from out-of-state have a number of fishing license options, including one-, three- and seven-day licenses to keep the sport affordable. Larscheid does remind anglers that while no license is needed this weekend, all fishing rules and limits still apply. Learn more about fishing rules, limits, and events online at: www.iowadnr.gov.
