IRS Lawsuit Scam Surfaces Again

Rock Rapids, Iowa — Scammers are at it again in the area.

Lyon County Attorney Shane Meyer says that there have been reports that someone pretending to be from the IRS is calling Lyon County residents in regard to a lawsuit.

She says residents are advised not to give any personal information, including banking information, over the phone.

She says if you are questioning the call, you should call the IRS Field Office or local law enforcement.

The IRS says that this kind of scamming is known as “phishing”. They say if someone calls you on the phone and says they are from the IRS, and you’re concerned whether the call is legitimate, you should write down the employee’s name, badge number, call back number, and caller ID if available. Then you should call 1-800-366-4484 to determine if the caller is an IRS employee with a legitimate need to contact you.

Again, authorities stress that you should not give any personal information over the phone, and call law enforcement if you suspect a scam.
