January Fairly Average Weather-Wise

Sheldon, Iowa — Despite experiencing a nearly 60-degree swing in air temperature in a two-day period…more when you factor in wind chill, January 2019 turned out to be a fairly average weather month here in northwest Iowa.

According to the official National Weather Service observations for Sheldon, the warmest high temperature in January was recorded on January 6th when the mercury topped out at a very pleasant 45-degrees, while the coldest high temperature for the month of -5 was recorded on January 30th. The average high temperature for January was 23-degrees, which is just 2-degrees cooler than the normal average of 25.

Low temperatures varied widely during the month of January, as well, with the warmest low temperature of 31-degrees recorded on January 7th and 8th, while the lowest low was -25, which was recorded on January 30th. The average low temperature for January, 2018 was 4-degrees, which is the normal average low.

Precipitation for the month was well below average, with just 0.34″ of moisture falling on Sheldon during the month. That’s 0.31″ below the normal January when we see 0.65″ of precipitation. Snowfall for January was also well below average. 3.65″ of snow fell in January, which is 2.75″ below the normal of 6.40″.

The big temperature swing came during the last few days of January. We went from a high temperature of 34 degrees on January 28th to a low of 25-below just two days later.
